Domain Protection Forgotten In The iPad Hoopla
Thursday, January 28th, 2010Tech Crunch reported today that Apple had not secured any iPad related domain names prior to launching the iPad.
Obviously as a bunch of people passionate about domain names we feel that Apple’s launch of the iPad would have been even better had they secured the domain names for their brand prior to the launch. If you visited some of the ipad websites today looking for information this is what you would have found.
ipad.com
Not much to see here.
ipad.com.au
An Australian property developer’s website.
ipad.co.nz
Cute, but not much here.
ipad.co.in
A good old fashioned parked page.
ipad.org
iPad.org is the only relevant domain name and the registrants deserve to be congratulated for their foresight in registering the domain name. Whether they get to keep it is up to the Apple lawyers.
The lesson is pretty clear, unless you can create the same hoopla Apple did with the iPad, you should register your brands in all markets where you intend to compete before you launch your product.
